Mica Shields (Gauge Glass Mica)
Mica shields are made from the highest quality natural transparent muscovite mica and supplied in various lengths, thicknesses and widths according to customer needs.
Mica Shields or Gauge Glass Mica can be used to secure the liquid level gauges from corrosive and acidic solutions. It is unaffected by high temperature and high pressure, as we can say that it is a medium to monitoring the measurement of boiler, as well as pressure of steam. It provides best-sealing strength against sodium, acid, water, air and oil at extreme pressure and temperature. It eliminates the risk of breakages, jerks, cracks, combustion effects etc.
Mica shields provide excellent protection against acids, steam, water, air and oil at high pressure and temperature, and eliminates the risk of cracks, fractures, shock, burning, rinse the glass.

What is Mica Shield Used for?
Natural mica has high heat resistance, is transparent; optically clear, flexible, flat and unbreakable. Transparency of mica is unaffected by temperature changes as well as the action of gases and vapors in an environment where it works. In addition, mica is resistant to shock, vibration or deformation and therefore is used as a protection of glass exposed to radiation, mechanical damage and the action of corrosive chemicals.
Mica shields provides the best protection possible, to flat transparent, sight glasses in water and liquid level gauges and columns in high pressure steam boilers. The shields retain basic strength and increase the service life of sight glasses when used at increased steam pressures and high working temperatures.
Mica Shields are widely used in visual liquid level gages to protect the glass surface from the corrosive effects of hot alkaline or acidic solutions. Mica is commonly used in steam water applications to prevent etching and the weakening of the glass.
Grades of Mica Shield for Level Gauge
The quality of mica used in visual liquid level applications is determined by visual examination where the suitability is assessed on the basis of appearance. In this process of quality evaluation emphasis is placed on clarity, color, flatness, hardness, stains, visible inclusions and structural imperfections. As a result of this procedure, Mica is classified according to grades.
The most common mica grades used in liquid level gage applications are as follows:
- V1 Green or Ruby (Clear) – Mica shields at the highest quality level, are clear and flat, providing the highest level of visibility as well as protection. V1 mica is not obstructed by cracks, air pockets, colors or other factors.
- V2 Green or Ruby (Slightly Stained) – V2 mica shields are slightly colored, and are considered to be navy-grade quality.
- V4 Green or Ruby (Stained) – V4 mica shields will have more noticeable discoloration, and may contain some air pockets and a slightly wavy appearance. These mica shields still provide suitable protection from steam and alkaline solutions, but have some reduced visibility. Mica shields are divided into quality designations through a visual inspection.
